How to use

Run a clean first pass

  1. Black moves first — that's you. Tap a square marked with a red dot to drop a disc and flip the AI's discs trapped between yours.
  2. Fight for the corners and edges — discs there can never be flipped back. Each higher AI level guards them harder.
  3. Play until the board fills or neither side can move. Most discs wins. Take a move back anytime, or share the final board.

Examples

Real jobs this page helps with

  • Learn on BeginnerThe beginner AI plays loose and grabs whatever flips the most now, so you can win your first game and feel how flipping works before stepping up.
  • Corner discipline vs AdvancedAdvanced searches several moves ahead and pounces when you hand it a corner. It's where casual players start losing — and start improving.
  • The Master's endgameIn the last dozen squares the Master switches to an exact solver and plays the mathematically best finish — every disc in the endgame counts.

FAQ

What people usually want to know

What's the difference between Reversi and Othello?

Same game, same rules. 'Othello' is a trademarked edition; 'Reversi' is the older public-domain name. Both start from the same two-black, two-white cross in the centre.

How strong is the hardest AI?

The Master weighs corners, mobility and frontier discs, counts stable discs, and solves the last ~12 squares exactly. It beats the Advanced level about 60% of games and punishes loose play — not unbeatable, but it won't hand you the win.

Are the four levels really different, or just labels?

Genuinely different. Before shipping we ran the four AIs against each other for hundreds of games and confirmed each tier beats the one below it. Beginner is deliberately weak; Master rarely slips.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. It runs entirely in your browser, works offline once loaded, and stores nothing on a server. Open it and play.

Can I play white, or take a move back?

Both. Choose black or white before a game (black always moves first), and Undo steps back your last move whenever it's your turn.
